Taste of Heaven

I have sung the praises of Holland House, but I wanted to try out its competition: Patterson House. The majority of the reviews mentioned the wonders of the Bacon Old Fashioned so I had to try it. Warning: it is not for the faint of heart. It has a strong smokey flavor. But as you keep sipping, the smoke subsides and you can appreciate the smooth pairing of Benton’s bacon and bourbon.

This is my version of chocolate and peanut butter (especially since I don’t like that combo myself, but everyone else loves it). It was just absolutely perfect. A bit of bitters and some orange zest balanced out the strong flavors of smoke and, well, bourbon. But I’m a girl who loves her bourbon and bacon. The ginormous ice ball kept it from getting watered down, and I appreciated that forethought. Now I’ve had bacon gelato and bacon bourbon.

Patterson House has great decor, very luxe 20s with tin ceilings and beautiful bookcases. I drooled over all the fresh ingredients set up on the bar like mint and oranges and blackberries. The service was nice. I had some issues with the tiny space and the crowd that evening. I enjoyed the drinks, but I like the atmosphere of Holland House better.

So great! I'm all about Bacon and booze. I can even tell you all about infusing your own vodka with bacon: http://blenderbooze.blogspot.com/2011/02/fat-washing-process-for-bacon-infused.html

I'm not a big fan of vodka, but I'm guessing the same concept applies to infused bourbon. Thanks!
